Shatterglass Circle Opens Book 4 Tamora Pierce Books

In this riveting novel, Tris and Niko are in Tharios, an old city with quite rigid beliefs, traditions, and caste systems. Niko is there for a major conference on magic related to weather and scrying; Tris is there to explore the city, to learn about glass making, and to develop her abilities to gather information from gusts of wind. Things quickly become complicated by two events. The first is Tris' discovery of a glassmaker, Keth, who is attempting to recover his glass-making ability after being struck by lightening and who is, although he is not aware of it, an ambient mage of lightning. The second is a rash of serial murders, all of lower class entertainers and all designed to attack the purity of the city of Tharios. When two of the victims turn out to be friends of Keth, Tris finds herself deeply emerged in the chase to track and capture the killer.
As has been true of this quartet, the fact that each follows only one of the circle of young mages means that the reader discovers much more about the main character (and her mentor, Niko). Pierce's imagination is at its best, as she creates a city of great beauty that is dangerously trapped in its rigid traditions. I am amazed by the consistency of her novels: tight, engaging plots, realistic and complex characters, witty and often ironic dialogue. Try to find yourself a few peaceful hours and immerse yourself in this wonderful fantasy: you will soon find out that you have been captured!

Shatterglass Circle Opens Book 4 Tamora Pierce Books Reviews

This story has one of the coolest magical pets I have read of. Chime the glass dragon will steal your heart, and the absorbing plot will make you so interested you won't want to say goodbye even when the book is done. This is my second reading of this book and I enjoy it as much as the first. It makes me think of Andre Norton's novels, and I can give no higher praise than that, she was the best.I only regret that this author is not writing much now, wish she were back in full swing. Start with this book, and go on to Beka ones,or whichever ones you fancy. They are all superb.
Shatterglass is the fourth book in The Circle Opens series by Tamora Pierce and follows Tris and Niko on their travels.

Tris loves glassblowing. So, exploring the local glassblowers in a city famous for them, she stumbles on an ambient glass mage. Not knowing he's a mage, he's just created a living glass dragon and is terrified. Now Tris has to figure out this poor man and how to teach him to combine glassmaking and magic without any more accidents. Of course, he's terrified of lightning, and she's a weather mage. So it might be a little more difficult than it seems.

Plus, there's a killer on the loose in the city. Keth, the student, can blow fortune telling glass balls filled with lightning that reveal where the next victim will be laid. Determined to help catch a killer, Keth and Tris must figure out these glass globes and how they can help with the killer. Meanwhile, Tris is working on a scrying technique of her own that might help as well.
What a great book! I wish the middle 2 books in the quartet were as tight and suspenseful as this one. This and Sandry's book (#1) are the best in the quartet - the subplots all smash together, all the loose ends are tied up, the motivations of the killer are made clear, and the worldbuilding is frustratingly good (if you read it, you'll know what I mean). I also appreciated that the protagonist can't be the one to magically (literally!) solve all the problems, and that there were moments when things got even above her head.
I don't consider myself a "fan" of Tamora Pierce, but I have been picking up her books lately because they are an easy and quick read. I have read all of the Circle Opens quartet now. Since I have not read the previous quartet which introduced these magical youngsters, I cannot judge these books in the context of the larger series. I can only judge each one by how well the characters grabbed me and how compelled I was to read on.

Shatterglass stood up rather well. Tris was an interesting character, a sort of nerdy and not too attractive girl who carries her magic around in her braids. Keth blows glass which contains lightning! You gotta love the originality of this series. It does not fall for the usual cliches. Well, yes, there is a murder mystery, and the conclusion is somewhat predictable. Nevertheless, as I finished reading this book, I realized that the Circle Opens series is refreshingly unique. There is not a single sword fight in the whole collection! OK maybe there are a few fights here and there. But nothing like the Lioness quartet, which is a 12-year old girl's wet dream about how glorious it would be to do just like the boys do! Also, the Circle quartet avoids the Generic Fantasy Middle Ages furniture-- kings, castles, Gandalfian wizards and warriors thundering around on steeds. Nope--this series is all about young mages discovering the talents of other youths, and being obligated to teach them! In contrast to a million fantasy novels where magicians are mightily saving the world from demons, these mages are using magic in practical ways to make beautiful objects, to protect from fires, to catch a criminal.

I have read the Lioness series, the Immortals and the Tricksters' duet. I would say that the Circle Opens series is the best out of the lot.
Tamora Pierce is one of the best authors I have ever read. This one of my (and my daughter's) favorite books. When my daughter was in middle school, she dressed up as Tris. I made the dress and braided her hair. She already had the glasses! That is what I really respect about Ms. Pierce, she writes about real people with real feelings in a fantasy world setting. Her books are real with none of the uglier aspects of life hidden from the reader. She has I spired me on a number of levels, and she has helped both my kids with her books.
