Lord Perfect Carsington Family Series Loretta Chase 9780425208885 Books

I struggle in deciding which book in the Carsington series is my favorite. All three are brilliantly funny with sparkling dialogue, witty characters and surprising action. Here, the main characters are Benedict, the oldest Hargate son and heir, who is intelligent, reliable and encapsulated by his duty and place in the world; the adult heroine is Bathsheba Wingate, whose family line is known as the "Dreadful DeLuceys," and who struggles to raise a precocious 12 year old daughter, Olivia, who is hell bent on living up to her ancestral reputation. Benedict is minding his serious young nephew, Lisle, and when the four meet, fireworks begin. Both Lisle and Benedict's universe is sent careening through a series of events with which they must learn to cope. Along the way are more adventures than either of them dreamed existed, leading to a satisfying ending. Great humor, wonderful characters, quests, and life changing events. Such a wonderful book...and it may be my favorite. More than highly recommended.

Lord Perfect Carsington Family Series Loretta Chase 9780425208885 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Chase writes a fine story in this genre of Regency romance. The story line of the overwhelming familial and societal duty, expected of a first born son of an aristocratic family in Regency England, juxtaposed with the life of one of the "most notorious" (read - wrong for the man) woman in England has been done. HOWEVER, Ms. Chase does it SEAMLESSLY here, with a wealth of compelling main and ancillary characters along with wonderfully interwoven parallel storylines. The handsome Benedict and sultry Bathsheba (wonderful name exacting of the storyline) are strong, intelligent, erudite characters that stand alone in their own right. Given, they are not the ingenue and young buck, their relationship and understanding of the barriers to a realization of a life together is believable, interesting and well written without being maudlin and usually accompanying hand wringing histrionics. The parallel story line of the terrifically portrayed children, Olivia (Bathsheba's daughter) and Peregrine (Benedict's nephew), mirrors and plays out the story of the of the adults. Both lines are brought together in the end in a heart tugging conclusion. I had the Kleenex out and that doesn't happen often for me! The prose is tightly wrought, witty and poignant; sexual tension and intimacy is intelligently approached and well integrated in this story of two consenting ADULTS. IMHO this entire series of 4 brothers is a great success. Let's hope the story of the father, Lord Hargate, is written. The patriarch of these men has to be worthy of book! MEANWHILE - Olivia and Peregrine simply MUST have their own book! These wonderful characters are outstanding and need their story continued and completed! PLEASE Ms. Chase?

As you can guess this is one of my keepers.
Benedict Carsington, Viscount Rathbourne, is Lord Perfect; until he meets up with Bathsheba Wingate,
of the Dreadful DeLucey family. After Benedict’s thirteen-year-old nephew and godson Peregrine Dalmay, Earl of Lisle, and twelve year old Olivia Wingate, daughter of Bathsheba, throw the two adults together, a very mismatched romance follows. I loved the story, I even dropped a few tears which I NEVER do. Great secondary characters as well. Cute plot, humor, and banter galore. But I have a serious observation...a romance between Lisle and Olivia after they grow up could be an outstanding story, given their adventurous history. I've only read a small section of Loretta Chase's books and I hope to find she thought ahead and wrote one.
I really enjoyed the dialogue and characters in this book right up until the denouement. That is the reason for the loss of one star. As is usual with Chase books, the dialogue was wonderful and witty and the characters were both likeable and interesting. As this is the second to last book in the series, you will have read plenty about Lord Perfect prior to this book, and be very interested in getting to know him.

Bathsheba is a great character, but it is really the two kids who steal the show. Another reviewer wrote negatively about a woman (the heroine) who could enjoy flirting with the hero when her daughter was at large somewhere in the country. Well, the daughter in question is kind of a shark, so it is really everyone else who needs to be worried. I thought Chase did a great job making Olivia savvy, but not too grown up. Generally I hate it when people put children in the middle of romance novels, so it is high praise indeed when I say I liked the two kids.

Olivia's savvy nature is what makes the ending of this book a bit beyond the usual temporary suspension of disbelief that is necessary in any historical romance. It doesn't ruin this book, it just didn't make it as "perfect" as I would have suspected. I know I am probably too hard on Chase, but that is only because she is the best out there when it comes to Regency romances these days. With dialogue and characters like Heyer, but with sizzling sex scenes, she is a real pleasure to read.
Having just discovered Loretta Chase few months ago, thought she was okay enough to buy her books. But there are very few of these romance historicals that make me laugh, make me cry and make me feel I am reading something way beyond a silly romance/drama/suspense thriller. This was amazing and much better than any of her other ones - loved the hero Benedict. None of the usual misunderstandings, 'cold lordly' stuff, just two people - mature and helplessly attracted to one another. From the moment of Olivia's apology to Peregrine, I knew I was going to like this book. Ended up loving it. Haven't read the others in this series but obviously now I will.
