American by Day Derek B Miller Books

Soft boiled male American cop teams up with a hard boiled Norwegian female counterpart. Modest mayhem, sharp dialogue and excellent chemistry between the leads make this mystery thriller a winner. At first I thought that the Norwegians in American by Day seemed distressingly normal and the American characters by contrast seemed distinctly offbeat then I realized that is actually a pretty good description of real world differences between the inhabitants of the two countries. The book starts off slowly following the driven Norwegian cop from Norwegian by Night and does not pick up until the American cop comes on stage and proceeds to steal the show,a ex-divinity student who got so bored he ran for sheriff of a tourist town in upstate New York. Committed to being a decent human being and abhorring macho cops he blends a much needed sense of humor with his strait laced Norwegian counterpart's extreme professionalism. He even her lets her participation in the popular European sport of berating any available Americans for the usual laundry list of flaws(most all too true) roll off his back. The result is a marriage made in heaven and the book is sweet read from then on. Good chuckles, occassional deep thoughts and equally good supporting characters made the pages slide by. Though lacking the gravitas of his first two novels the may be his most accessible work to date. Goes into my reread pile.

American by Day Derek B Miller Books Reviews

The Girl in Green by the same author is pretty close to outstanding. This one isn't quite as good but that only means that its good. A female Norwegian police detective comes to the U.S. to locate her long lost brother who has been there for many years. Poor Marcus is carrying a lot of emotional baggage related to the death of his mother years before and has never been able to get his act together until recently, when he falls in love with a local college professor. It turns out that said professor has recently died from a fall from an abandoned building and Marcus feels considerable guilt for his role in that, which the local police suspect was a murder and he is the prime suspect. Knowing that could not be possible, his sister teams up with the local sheriff to find him before the other cops hot on his trail find him first, fearing for his life. She and the local sheriff, Irv, make an interesting team as they pursue their prey. The authors characters in all of his books are cerebral folks given to introspection and interesting dialogue and there are lots of diversions into self-examination that to me add interest to the story. They are not cardboard figures by any means. So I'd recommend adding Mr. Miller to your required reading list unless you are committed to thrillers with lots of "action" with heroes who act rather than think. Recommended.
Very well written. Gently shows how easily we don't see prejudice, because that's how it's always been for us. As one example, a black minister is sitting in the back of a police car (not incarcerated), and he says "so that's how it feels." This book looks specifically at blacks and women, but really doesn't stop there.

This book should be read by everyone, especially if they are "not prejudiced." I will look for this author for more.
Miller's books just keep getting better, and this one is terrific. It's funny, scary, thoughtful, and moving. Sigrid is a strong observant law enforcement woman who wryly notes the differences between Norway (yeah, Norway) and America -- scotch is Much cheaper here, but your chances of being shot, Much higher. Irv, the US Sheriff, is great, and I'd like to see a whole book with him as the main character. Marcus, the troubled brother, is the weakest depiction, but oh well. Hope Miller keeps going, and just sad we'll have to wait at least a year for his next one.
This is a story about how perceptions can be wrong or right, but regardless, they will rule your life.

Derek B. Miller is a smart and funny guy. I loved Norwegian by Night, and was thrilled to find its counterpart, American by Day, had been published. In this story, police Chief Inspector Sigrid Ødegård travels to the U.S. to save her brother from himself, and a bunch of trigger-happy law enforcement people. This book has it all humor, wit, cynical truth about human nature, great descriptions, love, race, violence (implied if not depicted), peace-making, feminism, mentoring, grief, tragedy...and a happy ending. The author's background informs his writing. His bio says, "Derek B. Miller has worked on international peace and security for think tanks, diplomatic missions, and the United Nations...." He is an American who lives in Norway, so he knows both cultures. He's a fine writer.

I especially enjoy how smart his good guys are. In this book, Sigrid is a low-key, kickass pragmatist, who also sometimes fails completely.

I was heartsick over the depictions of what it can feel like to be a black person in America. And I am heartsick to think there are no answers, except, as the Sheriff says, to talk to each other. To know each other. To be human with each other. But it's so little, and so late.

The only negative about the writing in this book is that, as with the stellar Norwegian by Night, some of the dialogue (internal or spoken) goes on too, too long. But I don't care. The book is fantastic.
Unusual, well written police procedural and more. Characters with depth revealed by circumstance, interior monologue, and witty dialogue with substance. Secondary cast of institutional stereotypes true to form but hilarious in their performance. And, a bonus serious and realistic commentary on the stubbornly unsolved American original sin from multiple, realistic perspectives. If some paragraphs seem too long, ask yourself how would you fix it. His best book yet.
Too many sanctimonious lectures about America from the Norwegian cop Sigrid end up being a distraction from the plot of the book.
