I expected this to be a light, humorous book. It is a light book in some ways, with plenty of humor, but it also has a deeper message. Will is CEO of a cosmetics company in Nashville. Hanna was a kindergarten teacher from a small town in Minnesota when they met during the filming of The Price of Love reality show. Hanna was dubbed "Holy Hanna" because she tried to keep her Christian values during the show. On the last show of the season, Will picked Hanna for his bride. Then, in an interview, Will said some ill advised things that seemed to suggest Hanna wasn't so "holy" after all, which resulted in some trashy and sometimes vile publicity for her. Hanna doesn't want anything more to do with Will or the show. She quits her job and goes home to her dad's farm. When Will comes several months later, under pressure from his board of directors, Hanna still doesn't want anything to do with him but feels a pull toward him. They both have trouble at times keeping it just business. Hanna has to face some hard truths of her own behavior, as does Will. Ultimately, they both need to be reminded of God's grace. I enjoyed reading The Engagement Plot.

How far would you go to salvage your reputation?

In Hanna Knight’s case, it means going through a highly publicized fake engagement to a man she loathes.

Hanna’s heart was broken when successful young CEO William Preston chose her to be his fiancée on a reality show only to cast a shadow on her reputation just a little while later. The resulting scandal left her publicly humiliated and wanting nothing to do with William. But when he comes back into her life with the offer to repair the damage and save his own career in the process, she agrees to pretend to be his fiancée once again. The only thing tougher than being forced to endure the man she’d rather forget is discovering she may not hate him as much as she thinks she does.

The Engagement Plot is a hilarious romantic comedy in every sense, but it also has strong inspirational themes such as forgiveness and learning to trust God in difficult circumstances. One of the most prominent themes, however, is the tension Christians face when trying to maintain their testimony and values in a secular world. When Hanna’s reputation is called into question, she faces scorn from nonbelievers and judgment from many believers. This will be a relatable Catch-22 for many readers. The fact that the story shows how God’s grace helps Hanna overcome this type of situation is one of the novel’s greatest strengths as a Christian Fiction work.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves an uplifting story served with a heaping helping of humor.
William Preston is a very handsome CEO who decides to go on a TV dating show called The Price of Love. He chooses Hanna Knight, a simple, home town, God fearing woman (they start to refer to as Holy Hanna) who is ready to give Will her heart. That is until he humiliated her in front of millions of TV viewers. Then Will shows up in Minnesota, where Hanna lives, to ask for her forgiveness and to see if she would be his fake fiancé. Being his fake fiancé would perhaps stop the gossip about them and help him with his job. Things go pretty well at first. Hanna and Will find they haven’t lost their attraction for each other. You might even call it love. But then things start happening that causes their plan to spin out of control. Now there is even more scandal and Will’s job is on the line. Can Hanna and Will weather the storm of all that is thrown at them or will this separate them forever?

This is my first book by Krista Phillips but it certainly won’t be my last. The cover is what first drew me to want to read the book but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was an interesting plot that keeps you entertained from cover to cover. The people are well-drawn and true-to-life. You know…they have issues just like we do. Hanna was someone the reader could easily relate to. She wants to do the right thing but sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you think it’s gonna. I understand that! Will was a very likable guy; a good hero really. (except for the stupid thing he said on the show). Unfortunately, deep hurt caused him to set aside his faith. You can understand why as you read the story. The interaction between them was fun and sometimes a little frustrating but that’s part of the fun. The secondary characters were great and I liked getting to know them. You’ll find a wonderful balance of humous (I laughed out loud) and serious situations which really make it such a pleasure to read. If you enjoy misunderstandings and mayhem with a side of serious then you will love The Engagement Plot!

A few favorite moments

They’d always been opposite, even from the first day of taping for The Price of Love. He, the CEO bachelor looking for love, and she, the small-town teacher with morals tighter than some of the other contestants’ skinny jeans.

“Hanna, you have to trust me. I’m trying to fix this. So unless you want me to kiss you to quiet you down, I suggest you hush. I’m game either way”

“You gave them the power to wound you instead of seeking the One who had the power to rescue you.”
As the holidays bring a deluge of inspirational and heart-tugging Christmas stories, author Krista Phillips offers a light-hearted, fun-filled and faith-inspired book.
Hanna Knight, a kindergarten teacher in Duluth, Minnesota, wants to spread her wings a little. She has spent most of her life in rural Minnesota until she tries to bring a little adventure to her life by auditioning for a reality show with a dating theme. There she meets and falls in love with William Preston, the bachelor who ultimately selects her from among the female contestants. Unfortunately the romance doesn’t proceed without problems, big problems.
In a series of schemes and plots to convince everyone—the viewing public, friends and even their families—that they are still together, they manage to confuse themselves as well. The novel is at times laugh-out-loud funny and the writing style will keep the reader engaged while he or she alternately cheers for each character. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it is very different from what I usually read. My only criticism is that the author becomes repetitive at times. I think she could tell the same story well in far fewer pages.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
