Splatterism The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant An Upbuilding Edifying Discourse eBook Christian Winter C S Hand

"Splatterism: The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant" is a fantasy novella written by Christian Winter. The tale follows Evander, a suicidal minotaur and the last of his race who is set on destroying all of civilization in an effort to end his suffering. Accompanying Evander on his quest of suffering is Scammander, an elven archmage and scoundrel who has lost nearly all past magical knowledge. As the two explore the world through a series of long lost magical portals they wreak havoc and leave a path of destruction in their wake. Here are my thoughts on Splatterism: The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant;

Pros

+ Great cover art.

+ Intriguing premise.

+ Cast of unique, well described and interesting characters.

Cons

- Vocabulary is quite wordy so be ready for frequent use your dictionary while reading.

- Story meanders in its purpose often leaving you confused.

- Mention of certain things such as a drow elf for instance may be unknown to readers unless you're familiar with Dungeons & Dragons or something similar.

"Splatterism: The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant" has a great premise and as a whole was a unique and often challenging read. However, its unusualness is also its biggest downfall. I feel a large majority of readers would be lost in the tales obscureness. Things are generally not neatly pieced together and often just happen for no explainable reason. This leaves you as the reader bewildered as to what's really happening and why. Character's jump from point A to point B in the story with a purpose known only to themselves, which can quickly become frustrating and leave you lost. So is "Splatterism: The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant" fantasy genius or simply random ideas thrown together as a novella? Honestly, I just couldn't tell.

Splatterism The Tragic Recollections of A Minotaur Assailant An Upbuilding Edifying Discourse eBook Christian Winter C S Hand Reviews

Let me start off by saying this was one of the strangest and most mind blowing things I have read in a really long time. I started off a little confused and by chapter two thought this had to have been written while the author was dropping acid (in this case not necessarily a bad thing!), it is brilliantly descriptive and once you figure out what's going on a pretty decent plot.

I'll be honest, I really struggled to get through the first half of Splatterism simply because I wasn't really sure what was going on and the author's language was far above my head with me having to look up just about every other word (thank goodness for kindles built in dictionary, I'm not sure how I read books before it!). However, I was able to overlook all of the obnoxious language once I got about 90% of the way through the book and the book began making fun of its obnoxious language, it gave me a good laugh as well as a nice appreciation of good writing and one hell of a plot twist that I did not see coming, and I absolutely love it when I don't see the twists coming because most things you read these days are so predictable.

Overall, I'm only rating this as an ok read because of how much I struggled to get through it. I didn't really get into the story and understand/appreciate it until half way through, but if you enjoy lots of descriptive (and strange) murdering mixed with verbose language, more strangeness and a fast pace then you might love this one.
Splatterism is one of those books that I enjoy for the journey, not the destination. And that's good, 'cause I was never quite sure what was happening and why and, when I got to the end, I wasn't sure where I was.

However, that didn't matter, as Splatterism allows the reader to take time to ponder things great and small. You can, of course, just gloss over the philosophical questions it poses and still enjoy it, but much of the power of this novella comes allowing yourself to pause here and there in order to delve into your own mind.

For the record, Splatterism is a tale of the last living minotaur, Evander, and his journey in search of meaning. It occurs after a terrible war that destroyed the world. It is a well-written tale that stretches the mind of the reader. It gave me many fine moments of introspection--which I appreciated. It has been a long time since I read a book that caused me to think in such a manner and that alone was worth the price. The good writing, the amazing scenery, the elaborate worlds that Evander passes through, and the interesting puzzles that Mr. Winter provides were a bonus.
