I know, that was a low blow, having a small baby on the cover trying to attract unaware women with the strong power of their maternal instinct... problem is that, I'm not really a motherly type, and in any case I fell for the trick. But the cover, the blurb, a mix of both pushed me not only to buy the book but also to read it as soon as I downloaded the file.Fangs & Lullabies is everything cover and blurb promised, a story about two unlikely fathers, not only since there is now woman around to play the role of the mother, but also since they are vampires. Andrew is the older and wiser and he is also the one who chase away Nicholas when he started to feed and kill humans. That was almost 100 years ago and in the meantime Andrew built another life, and other relationships, the last of which with a woman, Cara, the mother of his son Jacob. Jacob is a little miracle himself, vampires cannot father children, but Cara was a specialist in the fertility field and she found a way; problem is that, after 19 years of relationship, she was probably not so young anymore and the pregnancy was also her death sentence. She died in childbirth and Andrew was left alone with a little baby to rise. When Nicholas comes back, he doesn't know about Jacob; he is not coming back to help Andrew, he is coming back since he cannot live no more without Andrew. Andrew is Nicholas's sire, and Nicholas feels the pull every childe has towards his sire.
It's strange but all the paranormal side of the story, Nicholas and Andrew being vampires, how one is a sire and the other a childe, how their life was before, the fact that they are centuries years old, everything seems to disappear when Jacob enters their life: from that moment on, they are only two fathers, rising a baby alone, not being ready to do so, and probably, if they have to be true to themselves, not planning to do that. After the prologue, where the author plans out all the details for the story, and give the readers the necessary "paranormal" elements, the novel takes a very precise pace, that of Jacob's life; every chapter is a year in Jacob's life, from 1 to 17 years old. Sometime the story is even told from Jacob's point of view, who, like any other baby in the world, looks at his father, Andrew, like an hero, and so it's not strange for him that he is out, fighting the bad guys. But again, Andrew's job as demon hunter, everything happening outside their home, remains exactly there, outside.
I think the author did a good job in making the story believable (and yes, even with Andrew and Nicholas being vampires) without making nor Andrew or Nicholas the "wife": Nicholas is indeed the one who is more at home, taking care of Jacob and effectively being the one raising him, but always waiting for Andrew to come back home and taking the important decisions... of course also planning everything to be sure that decisions matched the one Nicholas already took.

Review Two Vampires and a Baby - sounds like the beginning to a joke, right? This is what author Kallysten has written about in this book "Fangs & Lullabies" which is book one in the series "The Demon Age". The vampires in this story are Andrew who is Sire to Nicholas. When the story begins we meet Andrew with his human girlfriend, Cara, of twenty years as she is giving birth to their son, Jacob. Cara doesn't survive long into the story, leaving Jacob who she conceived using advanced science and magic, with Andrew. Not long after, Nicholas shows up on his Sire's doorstep vowing he has changed his ways and has returned to his sire. When Nicholas finds out about Jacob he steps up to help his Sire raise the motherless child.
This story goes through the life of Jacob each chapter a different year as he is growing up and showing different things that Andrew, Nicholas, and Jacob dealt with as a "blended" family. I say blended because this story takes place in a world where Vampires are known by humans yet not allowed to raise a child, as if anyone would ever believe a vampire could sire a human child. No they more than likely would have accused and killed Andrew & Nicholas for kidnapping a human baby. Needless to say this was one secret they all worked to hide.
As Jacob got older and traits of his vampire genetics started appearing such as super strength, speed, fast healing and excellent hearing, Andrew & Nicholas taught Jacob how to hide these traits and blend in with the human kids. They were able to hide their family dynamics until Jacob becomes a teenager and falls in love, sharing his families secret with his girlfriend. At that point Andrew has to decide whether to use magic or enthralling the girl to make her forget or to take a chance and let the girl in to their inner circle.
I enjoyed this story and watching the years go by the way the author wrote them. I really loved how the author rotated the view points throughout each chapter so the reader got an in-depth look at how each character felt. There were some parts of this story that had me laughing and some parts that made me chest hurt with those good ol' Feelz. I look forward to the next story in the series and wonder if we will see Andrew, Nicholas, and Jacob again. I can't help but wonder if Jacob would want to be turned as he gets older and starts to understand mortality more and how his two Dad's would have dealt with that - I also would have loved to see poor Andrew deal with Jacob going off to college, getting married, having kids... The story ends with Jacob age 17, so hopefully we will get to see more!
4 stars -- I recommend this story to lovers of Vampires!

I loved it all I would like to read more like this book.
Another hit. Follow three live. A vampire father, his son and his lover
LOVED IT!!!!!!! I've read it over and over.
The adorable cover, catchy title and the intriguing blurb captured my interest. This book far exceeded my expectations.
Fangs and Lullabies was a fabulous five star read to me a well-written story in terms of writing style, characters, plot, grammar, and unexpected surprises. In this book, these vampires were not emotionally cold creatures, but ones that still retained a lot of emotion and heart.
I enjoyed how the characters and their relationships developed in a natural and progressive manner. Andrew and Nicholas were like yin and yang, which worked well, since they balanced each other out as parents for Jacob. Near the end of the book, a spell goes awry involving Andrew and Nicholas, which provided scenes of fun, amusement and tenderness.
Highly recommended read.
I love paranormal romance, family stories, and both together allow me to my cake and eat it too. Usually stories with same sex couples are not my cup of tea UT I would have missed a great story if I had not read it. The characters draw you in and keep you reading long after bedtime.
